I went to the hospital today to have my temporary cast replaced with a "real" one - one that I'll wear 8 weeks, and not 6 as I thought. Conclusion: No skiing for me :o(
For the interested, the diagram on the left depicts the bones of the left hand. I expect the right hand to be somewhat similar - but mirrored of course. The mischieveous little bugger is no. 8 on the drawing. Given the size of it, I don't know why it should take 8 weeks for it to heal - oh.. and a possible additional 4 weeks if they're not satisfied with the X-rays after that.
And I'm told my hand/arm will shrink into vegetable state in those two months. Nice. So on top of everything I'll be disabled an additional month.
On the upside, maybe Kimie and I can use the money we save to go somewhere else, like London for instance. We've been talking about that for a while now.

I turned out that my "sprained wrist" was a bit more than that. Some obscure piece of bone connecting the thumb and the arm had suffered a crack, and the emergency room people were quick to equip me with a cast. Well, "quick" is 2½ hours, two of which I spent waiting. Not that I mind - I'm sure the lady with the broken wrist and the guy with heart problems needed attention more than I (afterall, it did take me 12 days to finally go to the hospital). But when you're sitting there from 6 to 8.30 - having not eaten since lunch - it sure feels like a long time.
Anyway, now my right thumb is perfectly aligned with my lower arm and thus totally useless. I keep thinking about a Gary Larson strip: Two cows sitting on a sofa, watching a ringing phone. One cow goes: "There it goes again. And we just sit here without opposable thumbs". I would have brought the strip here, but Mr. Larson is very particular with his copyrights.
The time frame, I'm told, is 6-8 weeks and since I already went almost two weeks - luckily the bone hadn't cracked all the way through and/or dislocated so it's already healing - it should be healed sometime mid January - with a few weeks to spare before going skiing (phew!). Downside of course is that Christmas and New Years will be left handed this year.

Friday we had the annual christmas party at my place of work... suffice it to say, I got home at 5 in the morning. At 5 in the afternoon I only just managed to get out of bed, and it wasn't until sometime around 9-10 in the evening that I was sort of fresh - and I think I owe it to a pizza and 1½ litres of Coca Cola. 10 years ago, a bender like that would've been nothing, but Saturday I sure felt like an old man :o(
And I don't think my wrist agreed with my drinking too much. I've had good progress - less pain and more mobility, but Sunday it acted up again. Or it could be, that I just sleep weirdly. For some reason I manage to tuck my arms and hands under my body when I sleep. Makes for some pretty painful yet funny awakenings with one arm hanging ice cold and limp from my body. At any rate I'm back to wearing some support for the wrist to help the recovery.
